Updates on Productivity Enhancement

Promoting Sustainable Farming
Small Millet Cultivation and Fodder Development by Thirupathur Vayalaga Jeevidam FPCL

This quarter (from July to September 24), the Thirupathur Vayalaga Jeevidam Farmers Producer Company Limited took significant steps to promote sustainable agriculture in the community. In Ovalipatti village, the FPO empowered 24 farmers to cultivate Barnyard millets by organizing awareness programs and training sessions. These sessions highlighted the nutritional benefits, market potential, and cost-effectiveness of Barnyard millets, motivating the farmers to cultivate this crop.

The FPO also provided technical guidance throughout the cultivation process, ensuring proper seed treatment and farming techniques. As a result, all 24 farmers successfully harvested an impressive yield of 18-20 bags per person per acre, marking a significant milestone in promoting Barnyard millet cultivation in the region. This initiative not only enhanced farmers' income but also contributed to the revival of traditional and climate-resilient crops.

In addition to crop diversification, the FPO focused on supporting dairy farmers by initiating a white sorghum development program. Quality white Sorgamseeds were supplied directly through the FPO, eliminating the need for farmers to travel long distances to purchase them from markets. This intervention not only reduced farmers' expenses but also ensured a steady supply of green fodder, which played a crucial role in improving the health and productivity of livestock.

The combined efforts of the FPO in promoting Barnyard millets and white sorghum development have had a lasting impact on the livelihoods of farmers, ensuring food security, better incomes, and sustainable agricultural practices in the community.
