A Tradition Revived: The Past and Present of Nutrition Gardens
For centuries, Indian rural households sustained themselves through Nutrition gardens—also called thottam, mitti baari, or angadi thottam—tucked into backyards or front yards. These vibrant plots of greens, vegetables, herbs, and fruits were nurtured mostly by women and ensured a continuous supply of fresh, chemical-free produce.

In October 2024, Ilayankudi Vayalaga Jeevidam Farmers Producer Company Limited successfully distributed 800 bags of fertilizer to 200 member farmers in the Ilayankudi Block. The fertilizer was provided at the right time and in the recommended dosage, aiming to boost paddy productivity during the critical crop stage.

As part of its commitment to strengthen eco-friendly farming practices, Jeevidam Limited facilitated a series of Panchakavya Preparation Demonstration Trainings in Farmers Producer Companies during September 2024. Over 110 farmers were trained in preparing Panchakavya, a traditional organic bio-input made from five cow-derived ingredients.

The training was organized by the Directorate of Horticulture, Odisha. The Krushak Odisha Portal is a free digital platform launched by the Government of Odisha to provide personalized and seasonal agricultural advisories to farmers.

The FPO successfully executed a business transaction worth ₹2.64 lakhs, earning a profit of ₹51,000, by supplying 24,000 vegetable seed kits to 8 Kalanjiam Federations across the Ramanathapuram region.

Athoor Kalanjia Jeevidam 10K Farmers Producer Company Limited, promoted by Jeevidam Limited with support from SFAC under the Central Sector Scheme, has over 1,000 shareholders actively engaged in aggregating and marketing maize, pepper, and coconut. The FPO ensures fair prices to its members and supplies to institutional buyers, while also meeting local needs by marketing paddy rice, groceries, and oils. By December 2024, it achieved a turnover of ₹1 crore for the FY 2024–25. Its success highlights the strength of collective farming and farmer-led enterprises.
